Shoei GT Air loud with the Z900?
on: August 09, 2019, 12:49:05 PM
So yesterday I tried for the first time my new gt air. I forgot my earplugs.. Jesus it was loud, it wasn’t a sound of high pitch wind noise but more something deeper and constant. Getting my head near the gas tank made it disappear.

Anyone experiencing that?

Yep.
I don’t think the air was designed particularly well for naked bikes.
I need earplugs or it gets a bit tiring on a longer ride.

If it can help you, I found the problem today. I was moving my hand at different location on the helmet.. problem is there’s too much air entering the helmet by the neck. This winter I’ll extend the “neck guard” to seal it better.

Try that putting your hand on your neck near the helmet next time, wayyyyy better!

Have you got the ear pads installed?

The Shoei Qwest I had came without them and they made a significant difference when fitted.

Tighten it 'til it strips then back it off half a turn.

Great question not sure! You’re still able to have earplug with that on?

Yeah they don't interfere with earplugs at all. Inside the Qwest you could see the EPS liner exposed where the ear pads are intended to fit.
I thought it a bad job by Shoei not to include them as standard. Maybe the do with the GT Air? Dunno never had one.

I checked this morning and I got them. (Even got the pinlock etc..)

Problem is at the neck/chin. 2 options for me; Get a bigger neck/jaw or get someone to sew an extention to the chin guard. Second option will be easier haha

I've had one for a couple years, with my old bike, i had a large after market screen and the helmet was great.

With the Zed, I did get the taller screen, made no difference. I run a Sena and at 100kph I can barely hear speech, and my music is turned up full blast and is still not good enough.

It's like a cyclone in there ! I'll be looking for another helmet soon.

Just try what I said! Yesterday I had a neck protection for cold weather, it blocked the chin entrance and the helmet was really quiet

I have a GT Air and AGV K5 and Scorpion 510 and ICON Alliance x2 and Scorpion 500 (yes, it an addiction but the Icons and 500 are all out of date age now).
The GT Air is quieter than the K5 but the K5 is much lighter and more aero at 5-10ish height, and flow probably 10 times the air--I had to check to see if the visor was down all the way. The Scorpion is about as quiet as the GT Air, just fogs up more.
This time of year, I often ride with a hoodie as a layer under my coat for the ride into work, and that extra fabric by the bottom of the helmet makes it much quieter. The trade off is the ride home is warmer and louder, and usually takes less time. Must be the warmer temps in the afternoon.
