I think you answered your question yourself lol. Air filter wont do a big difference but you can look at the sprint, K&N, bmc..

Theres a huge amount of debate regarding hi-flow air filters online.

IMO the OEM filter is fine, its oiled paper, like most disposable good quality filters. It filters well and flows pretty good too. Kawasaki isn't going to put a filter in that is restrictive, they need a good HP figure to sell bikes.

One advantage of K&N and other oiled cotton filters is usually the lifespan, you just clean them and throw them back in. One major disadvantage of washable cotton elements is the filter medium does not trap the smaller particles that paper does. As a result, you get another advantage of higher flow through the filter, but that is at the cost of filtration. Thats usually how the claims of HP increase are generated. Thats all very general info about paper vs. cotton, but it does apply to Z900.

If you use the Z900 in urban environment (not off road) the cotton are fine and the tiny HP gain and cleanablity are a bonus. Just remember not to over oil it.

My ten cents worth.

Either stick with OEM or go for higher end performance filter.

If you use the OEM, here is a mod I do to them: (cut the plastic rivets to remove screen).

I removed oem filter and replaced with k&n.  Looking at the oem filter there has to be at least 25 percent blockage due to metal screen they use on the tank side.  The holes are really small on the screen.  The new k&n performs well and only 63.00.

Yes and the fix takes 3 seconds.

What do you suppose the mesh is for? Better air distribution? I wondered this when changing mine out.

It acts as a form of "flame arrestor" in case it backfires.
