Too Hot?
on: August 02, 2020, 03:57:20 PM
Living in an area that usually has comfortable riding season of four months which can be stretched with cold weather gear I always look forward to warm and hot temperatures.
As of late though, it's been brutally hot with high humidity thrown in and I'm finding that I'm riding not as much as I want. Too much of a good thing. On my long ride days I get out at 5:30-6:00 AM to beat the heat and try to get home well before noon. I always wear full gear so  much later than that I get tired and soaking from sweat.  :006:
Is it just me or am I not alone in this?

Not alone, freaking hot summer this year. I try to leave early and come back by 2pm. Someone said on the tv it should be colder for the rest of the summer.

Grab some mesh gear, wet your T-shirt and hairs when you take breaks

If its over  26-27C (80F), im not riding  :001:   And i do use RS Taichi Mesh jacket and leather/mesh gloves, but over that temperature im not comfortable so whats the point?  :001:

Past week or two, 6AM till 10-11AM. (22-27C (72-80F))

Heard on the news that Phoenix measures 50C these days.....   Can't imagine that heat

But, humidity is a big factor, anything over 70% at 27 C (80F) is too much for me. 30% at 30C (90F) is bearable but not comfortable.

80 F is not a bad day lately. We start at about 75F and it rises into the nineties. Twenty years ago, even in the heat of summer a 5:30 AM start wearing a mesh jacket meant you would get cold or at least chilly for the first hour or two. Not anymore.

The last few have been like this. I rode to races in Watkins Glen, upper state NY a couple of years ago. 97-100 F the whole time.  :156:
At least when you were in traffic your sweat would evaporate off and cool you down.

Oh yeah, "as time goes by". I really didn't want to bring up that aspect. 😂
When I was younger I paid no attention to heat. Of probably a couple dozen cars I've owned (a lot of short owned cars due to wrecks. I was a crazy driver. But they were cheap), only the last two have air conditioning. I must be getting spoiled.

Down in North Texas I keep an eye on the heat index which the humidity plays a factor in.  If the projected heat index is above 105, i'm not riding.  Mesh gear helps; I typically wear armored riding jeans.  I do wear some kind of Under Armor shirt, I feel it helps.
