ChemTool Fire in my neighboorhood
on: June 14, 2021, 06:25:40 PM
Walked out the garage at 7 am this morning.... wow, huge plume of smoke to the north.  A local factory went up in flames (with many explosions). All workers evacuated and safe. They manufacture lube and grease products. A lot of hot oil running thru pipelines.

Photos were taken 5 miles away. I drove in and parked about 800 yards from the fire at 7:45. Explosions were occurring frequently for at least a half hour after that. Huge black plumes boiling upwards. I left at 8:30 when law enforcement began evacuating area.

It is noon now and the smoke plume hasn't changed... oil and grease burning off like crazy. Firefighters are NOT pouring water on it, would create run-off into nearby Rock River. They say it will probably burn for a few days.

Rockton, Illinois

First photo looking north, second photo looking south.

And a zoomed-in view of the immense blackness of the plume -

Might be a shortage of Lucas Red N Tacky, Lucas Extra Heavy Duty, Valvoline and WD-40 Specialist brand greases and white lithium greases. They were one of the largest manufacturers of these greases.

All kinds of YouTube reports on this. This one has some footage from a chopper showing the enormity of the smoke plume.

Still burning at 6 pm, but plume is small now compared to this morning.

Man that's crazy. I was working in the Port of Houston when BPs Texas City refinery exploded back in 2005. It was a less than pleasant experience, to say the least, but I made it home that night, and some fellas didn't.

First thing I think of when I see something like this is "did everyone make it out"

Dad was a plant manager way back in the day. I'm all too aware how one small mistake can cause heartache.

Really glad to see that the employees all got out safe. One firefighter injured as far as I can tell and that sucks, but it could've been worse.

Stay safe and keep that rubber down fellas, never know when your card is gonna get pulled.
