Z900 2020 Motul semi or full synthethic?
on: June 28, 2021, 01:22:57 PM
Sup guys,

My 2020 Z900 is ready for a oil change.
Would you recommend the Motul 5100 10w40 (semi synthethic) or the Motul 7100 10w40 (fully synthethic)? and why?
I mostly commute, and occasionally ride hard through the twisties.

Today's lubricants are all so good. Even the non-synthetic stuff. What is far more important than brand or type of oil is how often you change the oil. I change my oil & filter at 3000 mile max. Change it sooner after a trip to the mountains.

But since you asked, here is what I suggest.
1st oil/filter change at 300-400 mile using non synthetic.
2nd oil change at 1000 mile using full synthetic
3rd oil change at 3000 mile and every 3000 mile after with only full synthetic.

The biggest advantages of using full synthetic oil is how stable it remains at higher temperature. The cost difference isn't so much that IMO it makes little sense using anything but.

DO NOT listen to manufacturers recommended change interval as they are clearly written by their media department.

I second that. Dealer did mine when I bought used with a little over 400 miles with reg oem oil. I changed at 1000 miles with full synthetic then try to go to 3000 miles but usually give in around 2500 miles and go ahead and change. Also use either oem filter or hiflo every oil change. My truck says 8000 miles in manual using regular oil and I dont go that long even with full synthetic! Good luck!
