The Versys, Z650, Ninja 650 and Vulcan S all use the same motor/gearbox albeit with different cams, gears, electronics etc so yes all of these motorcycle have a cassette style gearbox.

Below is a photo of both motors, styling differences of course but it's the same motor / gearbox.

A cassette style gearbox in a budget bike is something you’d expect to see in only the highest spec exotic sports bikes and MotoGP. Yet the lowly Versys has one and nobody seems to either know about it or care. Except me.

Can you name another bike, budget or no, with such a feature outside of purpose built race engines? There may be one but I can’t remember.

This part was what I was questioning, in light of my post above

Oh, ok. Well that makes two of us then.  :821:
One of my biggest fears of owning a motorcycle is bending a shift fork. So when researching the 650 Versys for purchase, I was positively delighted to find out it had a cassette style gearbox. In case the dreaded shift fork ever happened, instead of having to pull the engine and split the cases to repair, I could simply pull the gearbox out of the side of the engine with the engine still in the frame! Great feature, all bikes should have them. 👍
My second biggest fear is rounding off the dogs.

It's because at the time the same engine was designed to help racers compete competitively in twin series events (such as Minitwins) with the Z650/ER6 bikes. Versys benefited by inheriting the engine.  :038:

That’s what I figured as well when I saw them running at the IOM TT a few years ago.
My Versys was a great bike but I grew tired of its ADV looks. I wish, rather than selling it, I had stripped it down and lowered it to make a naked with a round headlight. I doubt there’s a more reliable bike made than the 650 V.
