    Help! Gear indicator blinking

Suddenly happened on a ride out.

Bounces around sometimes, but the bike won't even indicate idle anymore.

    Mechanically runs as normal.

on the z400 this symtom could be caused by a slipping clutch, or drastic sprocket changes.  On that bike it is due to the engine speed not matching the vehicle speed.  This throws an error code 25 on the z400.  Something to check?

just near the shift shaft there is a gear indicator connector, gets a lot of weather, pull it out (tab is on the bottom) give it a clean with wd40 and a toothbrush.

I haven't changed any of that, it's all factory :) Probably due a chain change soon though. Clutch is good, mechanically sound.

Seems very intermittent this issue, I was going 50-60 mph and it popped back in with the correct gear.

    Bump post.

Still having an issue with my bike displaying the wrong gear and often shows either 5th or 6th gear.

I wouldn't really care as this is the 1st bike I've had with an indicator, however, the bike doesn't show neutral, so putting the kickstand down cuts the bike out.

I've ensured the connections are okay, not snagged or worn from what I can see.

Replicating the issue isn't difficult however, I have found that it tends to show the issue once it's been rode for about 10 minutes and is up to temperature.  Letting the bike cool down and then turning the ignition on, the bike will show neutral and be "correct" until the engine temp comes back up.

    I'd appreciate any help! :)

Battery is good, no issues there, starts well every time.

Mechanically the bike runs like normal, I haven't noticed any issues with the gears. I haven't changed the sprockets or chain as I read that adding or removing teeth with the rear sprocket can confuse the ECU/gear indicator.

"I've ensured the connections are okay, not snagged or worn from what I can see."
How many millennials does it take to change a light bulb? They won't change it, they will accept it for what it is.

The dash displays a gear depending on the voltage level being sent from the Gear Position Sensor, this voltage is a constant voltage and different for each gear, i.e. 1.5V for 1st, 2.08V for second, 2.69V for 3rd, etc. So if the dash is displaying an error between gears it means that the voltage it is reading from the sensor is a different potential from the oem specifications. This means there is most likely something causing excessive resistance in the circuit, like a high resistant or short cct connection.
That's why I asked you to pull the plug and clean. I know I am just a simple boomer but I have yet to fix anything in my life by just looking at it. The tab on the connector has 5 or 6 horizontal lines on it, you squeeze that spot and pull connector at the same time. You will have to get your head under the connector to see it.
